sur le pont d'avignon | france

Our excursion to Avignon was a happy accident. Originally, our group had planned to go to a water park about two hours away from Marseille. It was opening day at the park and the slides and rides all looked incredible on the website. However, things did not quite go as planned. Upon arrival at the park, we noticed that half the rides seemed to still be under construction. After driving around for a while, we decided to park and ask one of the attendants what was going on. We found out that the park was only going to be partially open as the more extreme rides still needed some work. We were all very disappointed after driving so far. While we were deliberating whether we would stay or go, we realized that despite the blazing sun, the wind was extremely strong and very cold. We all had noticed on our way up that we passed Avignon, a medieval French town that is the subject of a very popular children's song (at least that's how I knew what it was). Avignon's more prominent claim to fame, of course, is that it was the home of the papacy for about 100 years when it was moved away from Rome in the 14th century. So we decided to spend the day there instead. It was a great day for exploring, despite the fact that we were walking around the town in bathing suits and flip flops. We spent hours exploring the Papal Palace. I absolutely adore medieval fortresses and history in general so being able to walk these halls was incredible. After an amazing steak lunch at a little cafe, we visited the Avignon bridge. It ended up being a wonderful unexpected kind of adventure. Those are usually the best ones.
